Shortly after setting off I reached a village. I rode through it to a chorus of yelling and screaming, then realised I was supposed to have taken a turning. I had to backtrack a couple kilometres uphill, with an encore of the previous response.

It was a relief to arrive in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. It was quite a contrast to Sudan. The area near the airport is quite wealthy, and there were all sorts of well-stocked shops (including lots of liquor shops). About half the people outside were women, in western style clothing – and barely a headscarf in sight.

I rode through Abu Simbel to the ferry “port”. 5 buses and lots of pedestrians embarked after me and we were soon making our way across Lake Nasser, a 500km long reservoir formed by the High Nile Dam in Aswan.

Brief update
Just letting folks know I’m fine! Communication networks have been down in Sudan today. I might only have wifi for a brief time so just posting this quickly. Flights have been cancelled so I’ll be staying in Sudan for a little longer
